Internal Involvement

We offer a number of things within our student association to help promote inclusion, opportunity, and explore cohesive Public Health themes with other graduate peers.

Mentorship program: As of 2021, we ask current MPH students before the semester begins if they are interested in becoming a mentor to incoming MPH students during the Fall and Spring. At orientation, the President asks new MPH students to sign-up to become a mentee so they can have a current graduate student they can rely on and use as a guide throughout their time in the program. There will be a Zoom date where we will reveal mentor/mentee pairs following the first week of classes. After this, mentor/mentees are responsible for contacting each other as needed throughout the semester. If there are any issues, please contact our MPHSA Officers.

Journal Club: The Research & Development Chair leads our bi-weekly journal club we offer. They are in charge of picking a current Public Health topic at the beginning of each semester and hosting a meeting that MPHSA students can attend. At this meeting, students bring in a journal article related to the topic that they would like to present to their fellow students. Not only does this help students expand their knowledge on current research in Public Health, but it gives them time to informally present their findings (if they choose) in front of their peers. This is great practice for presenting research in graduate classes, seminars, and conferences. Refreshments will be provided.

Monthly Meetings/Seminars: For the 2021-2022 year, the MPHSA will host 3 Monthly Meetings/Seminars in the Fall and 4 in the Spring. These meeting will take place in the Devoe Moore Center located on the first floor in the Bellamy Building. Each event will take place from 6:30pm-7:50pm. From 6:30pm-6:50pm, the MPHSA will discuss updates and answer questions about the association from our graduate students. From 6:50pm-7:50pm, we will host a seminar for a Guest Speaker who is prominent in the community to discuss a Public Health related topic. These meetings are important to stay updated and involved in the MPHSA, while the seminars are extremely valuable to learn more about Public Health topics and professions you might be interested in as graduate students. Refreshments will be provided.

Hooding Ceremony: At the end of each semester, the MPHSA hosts a Hooding Ceremony for MPH graduates who are graduating during that time. This ceremony is meant to be an intimate moment between faculty, graduates, and their family members. We usually host the event at one of the amazing venues that FSU has to offer. Catering is typically provided at the ceremonies. Our ceremony is a great way to celebrate the accomplishments of MPH students, network with prominent FSU faculty and community members invited, and share the pride of our excellent MPH academic program.

Fundraising: Each year, we hope to get the MPHSA involved in the community for fundraising events that will help benefit our program. These may include share-nights with restaurants or other venues. It is very important to get as many graduate students as we can to participate when we do have these events. You are always welcome to bring friends, family members, and other FSU students. The more people we are able to bring in, the more the MPHSA is able to do. Please refer to our “Calendar and Schedules” tab to stay updated on events we have available per semester.
