The W.E.B. DuBois Honor Society originated on the campus of The Florida State University in the fall semester of 1990, under the leadership of Dr. Sandra Rackley, who at that time was Associate Dean of Undergraduate Studies, and Mrs. Rose L. Hogg. The idea for the honor society grew out of an interest in having African American students become more involved in scholarship and leadership honorary societies on the campus of Florida State University. Therefore, the primary purpose of the
W.E.B. DuBois Honor Society was to encourage such participation by identifying students who would be eligible for membership in other honoraries. The first induction, in the Spring of 1991, included forty five charter members. Since that time inductions have been held annually during the fall semester of each year. The honor society was named after W.E.B. DuBois as he made great strides in the struggle for racial equality and the uplifting of Americans as a whole.
