National Communications Coordinator- Casey Miskowski

CaseyWhat is your hometown? Orange Park, FL

What is your major? Creative Writing & Biological Science

What is your classification? 2nd year Junior.

What is your favorite thing about FSU? When I was deciding which college to go to in high school, I applied all over the state of Florida, but the only school that made me feel like I really mattered to them as an individual was FSU. I loved how a representative gave me a call every few months just to see how I was doing before I even decided to register at Florida State and how accessible and student-friendly the entire process was. One visit to the campus was enough to make me fall in love. (And it didn't hurt that my two older sisters were both students at FSU when I applied either.)

When did you first get involved with IRHC and why? I started out in housing as the secretary of Landis-Gilchrist as a freshman. After realizing how much I enjoyed that, I decided to become a Hall Ambassador, too. Then, when IRHC elections came around that same semester, I saw an opportunity to get even more involved in student leadership here at FSU so I ran for and was elected the NCC in Fall 2006. It was a big change from working in my hall government, but I started to really gain a solid understanding of what an on-campus community was and why it was so important. And I'm still learning!

What's your favorite contribution to IRHC thus far? Seeing as though the majority of my specific niche on IRHC is to manage conferences, I would have to say that my best (and favorite) contributions revolve around the five conferences that Florida State participates in annually. Perhaps my greatest moment happened at No Frills 2007 when I was set out on my own as NCC. I debated--for the first time--with NCCs from all over the South Atlantic on legislation for how these conferences would be run, and I really feel like my words made a difference. With each passing conference, I grow more and more sure of my position on behalf of FSU, and it is that representation at state, regional, and national conferences that has helped IRHC at FSU gain some attention on other campuses.

What's your favorite quote? "The opposite of love is not hate. The opposite of love is apathy." -Elie Wiesel
