Introduction from Director

¡Saludos Familia!

Director: Aldo E. De La Paz

It is with great pleasure that I welcome you to the Hispanic/Latino Student Union family at the Florida State University. The 2009-2010 year promises to be a great one for HLSU; our Executive Board and Board of Committee members are dedicated to serving the FSU community by providing innovative programs and opportunities to our members, colleagues, and the Latino/a community as a whole. One of our main goals this year is to make HLSU a valuable resource for our members while unifying all students on campus and providing a family away from home.

This year the Hispanic/Latino Student Union is celebrating its 15th Anniversary at FSU! Founded in 1995, HLSU is the second largest student agency at Florida State University. Throughout the year, HLSU holds numerous cultural, educational, service, and professional programs and events that raise awareness about the Hispanic/Latino culture and celebrate our roots. Some of HLSU’s annual events include our Hispanic Heritage Month celebrations, the Dr. Antonia Pantoja Scholars Program, trips to Latino Conferences around the nation, the annual HLSU Spring Week, as well as various social and cultural events, and more!

Apart from serving as a nucleus for Latinos on campus to come together, our organization also works closely with other Latino and non-Latino groups at FSU and nationwide. We also serve as the umbrella organization for eleven Affiliate groups which members can get involved in ranging from cultural groups, to professional and even Greeks. Since membership in HLSU is open to all FSU students, we encourage Latinos and non-Latinos to become involved in the organization. Members may choose to fill leadership positions within HLSU by becoming part of our Board of Committees, applying to be HLSU Ambassadors, or simply coming to our events and meeting the great people that form part of our familia.

I encourage you to participate in HLSU and come to one of the many events we hold throughout the year. You can also find us at the Oglesby Union during Market Wednesdays, on facebook, and at the Hispanic/Latino Student Resource Center (better known as “El Centro”) located on the second floor of the Oglesby Union in Room A212. It is my great pleasure to serve as the 2009-2010 Director and I am looking forward to continue “Honoring Our Roots to Enable Our Progress.”

Sincerely,

Aldo E. De La Paz
