The Journal: April 01, 2009
 

The meeting of the 61st Student Senate was called to order at 8:45 p.m. by Student Senate President Bobby Seifter.
 
Senator Yarbrough lead the Senate in the Pledge of Allegiance.

Student Comments: Christa Cruz asked the Senate to support Bill 26, which will allow the AcaBelles to travel to the Finals in New York City.  David Barnes, a member of Reverb, ask the Senate to support Bill 26, to send this hardworking, dedicated group to New York.  Amy Derringer asked the Senate to support Bill 26 to help the AcaBelles go to New York. She told the Senate that they are having their spring concert on April 25 and the proceeds will go to a children’s society.  Jaime Bayo asked the Senate to support the AcaBelles. Annie Ho asked the Senate to support the AcaBelles. Edward Kring ask the Senate to support Resolution 37, so that all students can feel safe in the classroom. David Grimes also asked the Senate to support Resolution 37. Jaime Bayo asked the Senate to support Resoltuion 37, because it will help students everywhere.
 
Special Introductions and Announcements: None.
 

Messages from the Executive Branch: Rob Jakubik, Student Body President, announced that the information session will take place on Tuesday, April 7, in the Senate Chamber. This session will allow students to meet the new administration and get general information. He announced that April 22 is Earth Day and they have a campus sustainability walk where they will pick up trash around campus and he has declared April as Sustainability Month.  He announced that the College Democrats is bringing Alan Boyd on Tuesday, April 7, in the Student Life Center room 249.  Sean Bevil, Chief of Staff, told the Senate that they want to get as many applications as possible and he wants the Senate to help advertise.  Kelly-Ann Fasano, Student Body Treasurer, told the Senate that she has frozen the funds of the Multicultural Greek Council for buying food where they were not suppose to buy it from and setting a garbage can on fire.
 
Messages from Agency and Bureau Directors, and SGA Organization Officers and Employees: Jessica Pinto, Director of the LGBTQ Resource Center asked the Senate to support Resolution 37.  She also announced that their Alternative Prom will be on Friday in the ballrooms at 8 p.m. Pinto also announced that they will have a picnic on April 11 at 12 Noon at the Reservation.  Ashley Finley, ILS Director, asked the Senate to support Resolution 37 because it will be a benefit to the university. Ian Johnson,  AASU Director asked the Senate to please support their events for
-their month.  Cornelius Troy, BSU President, told the Senate that the BSU is having elections today and he hopes the Senate will not hold what they did or did not do against the new administration and to please help the new administration as much as they can.

Report of the Student Body Auditor: As of March 31, 2009, Senate  Projects is $7,210.00 and Senate Unallocated is $5,000.
 
Committee Reports:

Student Affairs-Senator Sargent was elected Chair and Senator Dunnington was elected Vice Chair. The committee will set a meeting time next week.
 
Budget-The committee elected Senator Howard as Chair and Senator Hall as Vice Chair. The committee will meet at 6:30 p.m. before Senate.
 
Finance-The committee elected Senator Walker as Chair and Senator Kushner as Vice Chair.  The committee will meet on Tuesdays at 7 p.m. in the Senate Office.
 
Judiciary-The committee elected Senator Goins as Chair and Senator Daniels as Vice Chair. The committee will meet on Thursdays at 6 p.m. in the Senate Office.
 
Internal Affairs-The committee elected Senator Thompson as Chair and Senator Dougherty as Vice Chair. The committee will meet on Tuesdays at 8 p.m. in the Senate Office.

Rules and Calendar-Chairman Cuyler made a motion to move into Committee of the Whole, the motion passed. The Senate interviewed and passed Sara Moallem for Social Work Seat 1. The committee suspended Senators Proctor and Formella.  The Senate sworn in Lauren Robertson for Senior Class President and Ian Grossman for Senator. Both were absent from inauguration and needed to be sworn in.

Senate Affairs-Did not meet.
 
Sustainability-Did not meet.  
 
Central Reserves-Chairman Yarbrough told the committee members to check their e-mails for the meeting times.
 

Senate Confirmations: Sara Moallem for Social Work Seat 1. The Senate sworn in Lauren Robertson for Senior Class President and Ian Grossman for Senator.
 
Consent Calendar:

Bill 27-Sponsored by Senator Thompson.  A revision of $350.00 within Asian American Student Union from Contractual Services to Clothing/Award. Purpose: to purchase t-shirts. PASSED.

Bills First Reading:

Bill 19-Sponsored by Senator Hall. A revision to the Student Body Statutes Chapter 100.5. Purpose: to add Homecoming Director and Pow Wow Director to major offices of SGA. LAID ON THE TABLE IN JUDICIARY 2-12-09.
    
Bill 28-Sponsored by Senator Yarbrough.  A revision to the Student Body Statutes Chapter 401.3. Purpose: to create Expost Facto in the Statutes. REFERRED TO JUDICIARY.
 
Bill 29-Sponsored by Senator Kushner. A revision to the Student Body Statutes Chapter 902: Purpose: to clarify the goals of the FSU Service Corps. REFERRED TO JUDICIARY.

Bill 30-Sponsored by Senator Sargent. A revision of $800 within the Executive from OPS Wages to Expense. Purpose: to cover a $600 deficit within the Executive Office. REFERRED TO FINANCE.

 

Bills Second Reading:
 
Bill 26-Sponsored by Senator Thompson. An allocation of $3,000 from Senate Projects to AcaBelles. Purpose: to pay for travel to their Finals.  PASSED.

Constitutional Amendments: None.

Resolutions:
 
Resolution 37-   Sponsored by Senators Sargent and Dougherty.
Subject: Having no entities of SGA discriminate toward others in any way, and that work will be done to ensure that no organization receiving A&S Fees monies from SGA shall discriminate against FSU students.
    PASSED. YES-30, NO-14.

Resolution 38-   Sponsored by Senators Seifter and Peterich.
Subject: Amending the Rules of Procedure Rules 6.18 and 7.01.
    REFERRED TO RULES AND CALENDAR.

Resolution 39-   Sponsored by Senator Cuyler.
Subject: Asking the Florida Legislature to make higher education one of its top priorities.
    PASSED BY UNANIMOUS CONSENT.

Resolution 40-   Sponsored by Senator Wood.
Subject: Allowing ICS to spend more than $2,000 to bring a speaker to speak at FSU.  
   PASSED.

Unfinished Business: None.
 
New Business: The Senate elected Dustin Daniels for Senator for the Month of March.  The Senate voted to use $300 for food for Senate  Meetings by a vote of 27-yes and 10-no.
 
Closing Announcements: Senate President Seifter reminded the Senate about the information session on Tuesday, April 7 at 7 p.m. in the Senate Chamber.  He announced that the general meeting for Protect Our Professors on April 2 at 8 p.m. in 311 B Union. He congratulated the Synergy Party for winning the BSU elections. He told the new Senators that their financial certification is due within 30 days of inauguration.
